Laboratory diagnostics are critical to clinical decision making and the managed care for most disorders. The Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute states that, “quality testing encompasses aspects spanning throughout the total testing process.” This begins on the continuum with test ordering and concludes with results communication to the requesting physician. The identification and timely communication of results are regarded as one of the essential elements of good laboratory practice.
Although the agreement in the various national and international organizations is consistent, the practices of critical results management vary tremendously. Although this has been a focus for many years, many organizations have difficulty in practice. All recommendations call for the mandatory need to implement practices of communicating critical results and notification or acknowledgement recording.
Technology can solve this issue of efficient and timely communication with clinicians. This can easily be accomplished in this day of secure communications via a mobile device. Add in a platform agnostic product with no need for an application download, a means to acknowledge results, and you have an easy manner in which to accomplish clinical alerting.
